A Brief Hike in Austria

Ian Giddy

It was was spring 2001 in Bavaria. I'd descended the Hochries mountain, and wanted to see whether Austria was any different. My Kompass topo map indicated some interesting looking trails just south of the border, so I drove down to the village of Erl. Placid now, its border position has caused it to be burned to the ground twice; the church you see is the seventh to be built on the site.

I head uphill, leaving Erl below.
A steep ridge overhangs the village. I hike up and up, passing farms with abundant spring flora.

And fauna.

What's Austrian for cock-a-doodle-doo?
Are you a sane cow? And you -- how is your foot? Your mouth?

Two hours later, I'm nearing the end of the loop. The nearby peak, the ..., looks interesting, and challenging. There's a hut up there. Another time, perhaps. Better get back to the car now, and drive to Munich airport.
